Each time someone asks me to give them one tip on how to make a new habit stick — I have the same answer.
Regardless of what new thing you're trying to introduce in your life (weight loss, healthy eating habit/s, a new workout routine); the only critical success factor is making that one THING a priority.
Sure there are many other auxiliary things that you'll need to think of. Putting in the hours of practice. Educating yourself on the topic. Finding a mentor. Not giving up…
But none of these will make any difference to your success unless you make the THING a priority.
So — how do you go about sticking with a new resolution to workout regularly?
Commit to making it important — a priority.
Schedule the exact time of the day when you'll workout. Then take it seriously and SHOW UP!
Get off your butt when the time comes and DO, even if it's uncomfortable.
The beauty of this method is that it will work even if you can't seem to make logical sense of whatever it is you're trying to do.
The mechanical act of doing the THING will make your brain accept it and break through the discomfort. Pretty soon, you'll feel uneasy at NOT doing your workouts.
"It is not the decision you make that's important; it is the degree of commitment with which you make the decision."
From Chris Guillebeau's awesomely brave book The Art of Non-Conformity.
